Bacteriology is the scientific study of bacteria, including how they live, grow, and affect people, animals, or the environment. It is used in medicine, biology, and laboratory research. This is a technical academic word.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
bacteria（細菌）+ -logy（学問）と切ると覚えやすいです。biology, geology, psychology などと同じで、-logy が付けば「〜学」と読めるので、bacteriology はそのまま「細菌を専門に調べる学問」。bacterium / bacteria と同じ仲間だと結びつけると定着します。医学・微生物学・感染症の話で出やすく、biology より対象を細菌にしぼった専門分野名だと意識すると忘れにくいです。形容詞 bacteriological も一緒に見ると記憶が固まります。

bacteriologyはギリシャ語bakterion「小さな杖」+ logos「学問」から成ります。細菌が棒のように見えることから名づけられたので、「細菌学」は形の観察から始まった学問だと分かります。bacteriumやbiologyも同じ語根を含みます。
Bacteriology is formed from bacterio- and -logy. Bacterio- comes from Greek bakterion, meaning "small staff" or "little rod," because some bacteria looked rod-shaped under early observation, and -logy comes from logos, meaning "study." The word therefore grew from naming the shape first and then the science built around it; bacterium and biology are related words.
