A bacteriologist is a scientist who studies bacteria. This work is usually done in medicine, biology, public health, or laboratory research.

まず `bacteria` が見えれば「細菌」と結びつける。そこに `-logist` が付く形は `biologist` や `psychologist` と同じで、「その分野の研究者・専門家」と考えるとよい。つまり bacteriologist は「bacteria を専門に見る人」。`microbiologist` は微生物全般、`virologist` はウイルスなので、その中でも bacteria 担当だと区別すると記憶に残る。
