古英語 bearn（子供）に由来し、古ノルド語 barn とも同根。ゲルマン祖語 *barną（生まれた者）から派生し、bear（産む）や born（生まれた）と語源を共有する。スコットランド・北イングランド方言として現代も使われる。
Bairn comes from Old English bearn, meaning "child," and it is related to Old Norse barn. Both go back to a Germanic root meaning "one who is born." It shares its deeper origin with English words like born and the old verb bear in the sense of "give birth," and it survived mainly in Scots and northern English speech.
