Wicking is the movement of liquid through a material by capillary action. In clothing and technical fabrics, it moves sweat away from the skin toward the outer surface, where it can evaporate.

wicking は wick『ろうそくの芯』+ -ing。wick は古英語 weoce に由来し、candlewick や wick away と同じ根をもちます。液体を芯が吸い上げる動きになぞらえた語なので、布が汗を吸って運ぶ意味も自然につながります。
