湿気や汗を素早く吸収して外側に発散させる特性。通気性と速乾性を備えた素材。
Wicking is the movement of liquid through a material by absorption, or the material feature that allows this to happen. It is often used for clothing and technical fabrics that pull sweat or moisture away from the skin to keep it drier.

wicking は wick『ろうそくの芯』+ -ing。wick は古英語 weoce に由来し、candlewick や wick away と同じ根をもちます。液体を芯が吸い上げる動きになぞらえた語なので、布が汗を吸って運ぶ意味も自然につながります。
Wicking comes from wick + -ing. Wick comes from Old English weoce, the word for the fibrous thread in a lamp or candle. Because a wick draws liquid upward, the word later gave rise to the idea of moisture being pulled and carried through cloth. Related forms include candlewick and wick away.
