Hyperbola comes from Greek hyperbole, meaning "a throwing beyond," from hyper- "over, beyond" and ballein "to throw." In geometry, it was named for a cone cut at an angle that goes beyond the one for a parabola. It shares its root with hyperbole and with ballistic, which also comes from the idea of throwing.
