誇張とは、事実を実際より大きく、重要に、または強調して表現することです。大げさな表現方法のことです。
Hyperbole is language that makes something sound much bigger, better, worse, or more important than it really is. It is a form of exaggeration often used for emphasis, humor, or dramatic effect, not as a literal statement.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず hyper- を見たら「行きすぎ・過剰」を連想すると覚えやすいです。hyperactive や hypersensitive と同じく、普通の範囲を超えている感じ。そこから hyperbole は「言い方が行きすぎている」= 誇張。会話では exaggeration に近いですが、hyperbole はレトリックとして“明らかに大げさ”な表現に使われやすい語です。I’ve told you a million times. のような literal ではない強調表現と結びつけると定着します。発音は hyper-bowl ではなく「ハイパーボリー」系なので形にも注意。
Notice the prefix `hyper-`, which often means too much or beyond normal, like in `hyperactive`. So `hyperbole` is language that goes too far on purpose. Connect it with obvious overstatements such as `I've told you a million times`.

hyperbole はギリシャ語 hyperbole に由来し、hyper-「超えて」＋ bole「投げること」から成ります。本来は「的を越えて投げる」感覚で、そこから事実を行き過ぎるほど大きく言う「誇張」になりました。parable も同じ bolē 系です。
Hyperbole comes from Greek hyperbole, built from hyper- "over, beyond" and bole "a throwing." The original image is of throwing something beyond the mark. From that, the word came to mean language that goes beyond the facts by exaggerating.
