ポリオウイルスの感染によって起こる急性の感染症。多くは軽症だが、脊髄の灰白質が侵されると手足のまひを生じることがあり、重い場合は呼吸障害を伴う。日本語では「急性灰白髄炎」または一般に「ポリオ」と呼ばれる。
