骨髄の感染症で、通常は細菌が原因となります。痛み、腫れ、発熱などの症状を伴い、放置すると重篤になる可能性があります。抗生物質による治療が必要な医学的状態。
Osteomyelitis is a serious infection in a bone or in the bone marrow. It is a medical term used when bacteria or other germs cause pain, swelling, and other health problems in the bone. This word is mainly used in healthcare and medical writing.

医学語は後ろの -itis を見たらまず「炎症」を疑う、と覚えると強いです。dermatitis, arthritis, tonsillitis でも同じなので、未知語でも意味の当たりがつきます。osteomyelitis は osteo- と myel- と -itis に切って「骨＋骨髄＋炎症」と3分割すると崩れません。myelitis だけだと脊髄の炎症を指すこともあるので、osteo- が付いたら骨側の感染炎症だと区別すると定着します。診断名としては diagnosed with osteomyelitis, chronic osteomyelitis などで見かけやすく、骨の痛み・腫れ・発熱と一緒に場面ごと覚えると残りやすいです。
