Balkan comes from Turkish balkan, a word used for a mountain range or rugged, wooded highland. It was applied to the Balkan Mountains and subsequently extended in European geographical usage to the larger peninsula and region of southeastern Europe. The derived verb Balkanize arose much later from the region’s political history and means to divide a territory or organization into smaller, often hostile units.
