gist は「細部を全部追わなくても、中心だけつかむ」という感覚で覚えると残りやすい語です。まず get the gist / catch the gist という形をセットで覚えると実戦的です。長い説明を聞いて「全部は分からないが要点は分かる」がまさに gist。summary が整理された「要約」なのに対し、gist はその前段階の「いちばん大事な芯」。details と対比させて、gist of the story, gist of the email のように「話・文章の核心」を取る語として固定すると忘れにくいです。

gist は英仏語 gist「そこにある・成り立つ」に由来し、さらにラテン語 jacere「横たわる」にさかのぼります。『話や問題の本質はそこに横たわっている』という感覚から『要点』の意味になり、同根語に adjacent があります。
Gist came from Anglo-French legal language, where it meant something like "it lies" or "it rests," and it goes back to Latin jacere, "to lie." The idea was that the real point of a case or matter "lies" in a certain place. From this, English developed the sense of the central point or core; adjacent comes from the same Latin root.
