purport の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 purporter に由来し、pur-「前へ」+ porter「運ぶ」から成ります。言葉が前面へ運び出す内容から、「そうだと主張する」の意味へ発展しました。
Purport comes from Old French purporter, built from pur- meaning "forward" and porter meaning "to carry." The idea is of carrying meaning forward, which later developed into the sense of claiming or presenting something as being a certain way.
