thrust は中英語を経て、古ノルド語 þrysta「強く押す」にさかのぼるゲルマン系の語です。もともとは「ぐいっと前へ押し出す動作」そのもので、そこから剣の突きや機械の推力の意味になりました。thrusting や thruster にも同じ押し出す感覚が残っています。
Thrust comes through Middle English from Old Norse þrysta, which meant "to press hard" or "push strongly." The word first referred to the act of driving something forward with force, and later also came to mean a sword stab or the force that moves a machine or rocket forward.
