noun

まめ

解説 Definition

豆の植物の茎。特に「ジャックと豆の木」の童話で有名。

A beanstalk is the long climbing stem of a bean plant. The word is also strongly connected with the fairy tale "Jack and the Beanstalk," so it can sometimes suggest something very tall and thin. Its basic meaning, however, is still a real plant stem.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

bean は基本語の「豆」、stalkcorn stalk などでも出る「細長く伸びた植物の茎・軸」。この2語を見た瞬間に『豆+茎』と機械的に切れれば十分覚えやすい語です。特に beanstalk は単独で暗記するより、giant beanstalk, climb the beanstalk のように童話『Jack and the Beanstalk』の場面ごと結びつけると定着しやすいです。beanpole は人のやせた体形にも使えますが、beanstalk は植物そのものを指す、と区別しておくと混同しません。

This one is easy to split: `bean` + `stalk`. If you know `stalk` as the long stem of a plant, the image becomes clear at once. It is especially memorable in the story phrase `Jack and the Beanstalk`, with `climb the beanstalk` as a strong picture.

例文

Jack climbed the beanstalk and discovered a giant's castle above the clouds.

beanstalk の語源・成り立ち Etymology

beanstalk は bean「豆」と stalk「茎・幹」を合わせた語で、bean は古英語 bēan、stalk も古英語系の語に由来します。つまり意味はそのまま「豆の茎」で、身近な植物名をそのまま組み合わせた素朴な語であり、beanpole や stalk も形の連想に役立ちます。

"Beanstalk" is a straightforward compound of bean and stalk. Both parts are old Germanic words in English, with bean going back to Old English bean and stalk also coming from early English forms. The meaning stayed very close to the literal image, "the stalk of a bean plant," like other simple compounds such as beanpole.
