betelgeuse の語源・成り立ち Etymology
アラビア語 يد الجوزاء(yad al-jawzā'=巨人の手)に由来。中世ラテン語への転写時に語頭が変化しBetelgeuseとなった。オリオン座の右肩に位置する赤色超巨星で、「巨人の脇の下の手」という意味が星の位置と一致する。
Betelgeuse derives from Arabic yad al-jawza', “the hand of al-Jawza',” the giant figure identified with Orion. During transmission into medieval European astronomical texts, the initial Arabic letter was misread or altered, helping produce forms that eventually became Betelgeuse. The reference fits the star’s traditional position on Orion’s upper body. The modern English spelling preserves several stages of transliteration rather than directly representing present-day Arabic pronunciation.
