bilirubin はラテン語 bilis「胆汁」と ruber「赤い」から作られた学術語。bilious や ruby と同根で、語の中心には「胆汁由来の赤い色素」という発想がある。黄疸で知られる物質名なのに赤の語根が入るのは、化学的に見た色の由来をそのまま名にしたからだ。
Bilirubin was formed in modern scientific Latin from Latin bilis "bile" and ruber "red." The name was built to mean a red substance connected with bile.
