特定の地域や環境に生息する動物と植物の総体。生態系を構成する生物の集合。
Biota means the plants and animals living in a particular area or period. It is mainly used in biology, ecology, and environmental studies to talk about all living organisms in a place.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
bio- が付く語は biology, biodiversity など「生命」に関係するので、biota もまず「生きもの全体」を連想すると入りやすい。個々の species ではなく、ある地域にいる生物のまとまりを指す語。flora が植物相、fauna が動物相、biota はその両方をまとめた総称、とセットで覚えると混同しにくい。ecosystem は環境要因まで含みうるが、biota は生物側に焦点がある。soil biota, marine biota のように環境名と一緒に出やすい。
