Etymology
関連語: wisent(ヨーロッパバイソン)。
English “bison” came through Latin bison and French, with related forms appearing in ancient Greek and Germanic languages. The deeper history is not completely certain, but the word was long used for the European wild bovine now also called the wisent. European settlers later applied the same name to the closely related North American animal. The modern English word therefore covers both the American bison and the European bison.
