blindfold の語源・成り立ち Etymology
blindfoldはblind＋foldに見えるが、後半は実は古英語(ge)blindfellian「盲目にする」のfell系が中英語で変形したもの。つまり本来は「布を折って目を覆う」より「見えなくする」が先で、そこから名詞の「目隠し」になった。関連語はfell、befall。
Blindfold looks like blind + fold, but the second part is not originally the word fold. It comes from an older English verb related to Old English blindfellian, meaning "to make blind." So the idea first was "to make someone unable to see," and only later did the noun mean a cloth or covering over the eyes.
