weltは中英語の靴用語で、縁に縫い付ける革ひもを指し、語源は不確かだが古ノルド語velta「転がす」に結びつけられることが多い。そこから「盛り上がった縁・隆起」の感覚が生まれ、皮膚の「みみず腫れ」に広がった。関連語はwelter。
