ブレーキ、制動装置という意味です。自転車や車などを止めたり速度を落としたりする部品を指し、日本語の「ブレーキ」とほぼ同じ意味で使われます。

brake は中英語を経て、中世オランダ語 braec / braecke「物を砕く道具」に由来し、語根は break と同系です。関連語に break, breach があり、もともと「押さえつけて止める装置」という感覚から今の「ブレーキ」になりました。
