buggeryはbuggerに名詞語尾-yが付いた語で、buggerは古フランス語bugre、中世ラテン語Bulgarus「ブルガリア人」に由来します。buggerやフランス語bougreも同根で、民族名が異端者への蔑称を経て法律用語へ転じた歴史が背景です。
Buggery comes from bugger plus the noun ending -y. Bugger came through Old French bugre from Medieval Latin Bulgarus, literally "Bulgarian." In the Middle Ages the ethnic name was wrongly used as an insult for heretics, and from there it shifted into a sexual and legal term. A related word is bugger.
