bulbul はペルシア語 bulbul「サヨナキドリ」に由来し、英語へはヒンディー語・ウルドゥー語経由で入りました。重なる音がさえずりを思わせ、のちに似た鳴き鳥全体へ広がった語で、bolbol やトルコ語 bülbül も同根です。
