The English name is a shortened form associated with Kadohadacho, the name of a leading Caddo group. The longer name has traditionally been explained within the Caddo language as referring to “real chiefs” or a principal people, although English spellings varied historically. The shortened form was subsequently applied both to the wider confederated people and to their language. Settlers and administrators also transferred the ethnonym to geographical names in the southern United States.
