覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
民族・言語の固有名詞なので通常 Cherokee と大文字で書き、「the Cherokee people」「the Cherokee language」「Cherokee art」の形で覚える。民族を指す場合は Cherokee または Cherokee people を用い、単純な複数語尾を付けない用法が一般的。19世紀にセコイアが考案した文字体系とも結び付ける。
Treat Cherokee as a proper name and normally capitalize it. Build a small cluster of natural expressions: “the Cherokee people,” “the Cherokee language,” “Cherokee culture,” and “the Cherokee Nation.” When referring collectively to the people, Cherokee or Cherokee people is generally more appropriate than inventing a regular plural ending. A useful historical association is Sequoyah’s development of the Cherokee syllabary in the early nineteenth century. That writing system helps connect the word not only with a Native American people from the southeastern United States but also with their distinct language and living cultural traditions.

cherokee の語源・成り立ち Etymology
cherokee は英語での部族名で、17世紀の形 Chorakae を経て広まりました。語源はチェロキー語 Tsalagi にさかのぼる説と、マスコギー語系で「異なる話し方の人々」を表した語に由来する説があり、起源は完全には一定していません。関連形に Cherokee Nation、Cherokee language があります。
Cherokee is the established English name of the people and their language. English spellings such as Chorakae appeared in the seventeenth century. The name’s ultimate source is disputed: proposed explanations connect it either with Cherokee Tsalagi or with a neighboring Muskogean-language term interpreted as referring to people who speak differently. Because the historical route is not fully settled, the safest account recognizes the early English forms and competing Indigenous-language explanations without presenting either theory as certain.
