candela はラテン語 candela「ろうそく・光」が語源で、核は cand-「白く輝く」です。だから光度の単位に使われ、incandescent や candid も同じ根から「光るほど明るい・白い」感覚を受け継ぎます。
Candela comes from Latin candela, meaning "candle," from a root meaning "to shine" or "to be bright white." That same root appears in words like incandescent and candid. Because the central idea is brightness, the word was later chosen for a unit of light intensity.
