humbleness は humble「謙虚な」+ -ness「性質」。humble はラテン語 humilis「低い」から来て、その奥に humus「地面・土」があり、humility や humiliate も同根です。人が土に近いほど低いという感覚から、へりくだりの意味が生まれたとわかります。
