上皮細胞から発生する悪性腫瘍。がんの中でも最も一般的な種類で、皮膚、肺、乳房など様々な部位に発生する。
Carcinoma is a type of cancer that starts in the cells covering the skin or the lining of organs. It is a medical term often used by doctors when naming and classifying cancers.

まず cancer の少し専門的で細かい分類名だと置くと覚えやすいです。語頭の carcin- は carcinogen（発がん物質）、carcinogenic（発がん性の）にも共通し、「がん関連」の目印になります。語尾の -oma は melanoma, lymphoma など腫瘍名で頻出なので、病名らしい形として一括で覚えると定着しやすいです。特に carcinoma は『上皮由来のがん』で、cancer より少し狭い語。breast carcinoma, lung carcinoma, carcinoma in situ のような医療文脈で見かけやすく、sarcoma との区別も意識すると混同しにくくなります。

ギリシャ語 karkinoma が直接のもとで、karkinos「カニ」+ -oma「腫れ・腫瘍」に分けられます。腫れが脚を伸ばすカニの姿に見えるという古代医学の比喩が、そのまま「癌腫」の語感になっています。関連語の carcinogen や cancer も同系です。
