carcinogen はギリシャ語 karkinos「蟹」由来の carcino- と、-gen「生み出す」から成る語です。carcinoma や carcinogenic も同じ語根をもち、広がる腫瘍を蟹にたとえた古い発想から、「がんを生じさせる物質」という意味が組み立てられています。
Carcinogen is made from carcino- and -gen, meaning "something that produces." The first part comes from Greek karkinos, "crab," which was used in ancient medicine because some tumors were thought to look like a crab.
