ビリヤードで、手球が一回のショットで二つの的球に続けて当たるプレーを指す。また、物が何かに当たって別の方向へ跳ね返ることもいう。競技用語としてだけでなく、衝突後の反射的な動きを表す一般的な語としても使われる。
In billiards, a carom is a shot in which one ball hits another and then hits a second ball, or rebounds and strikes again. The word is mainly used in cue sports and can also describe a rebound or ricochet in a more general way.

carom はまずビリヤード台の場面で固定して覚えると残りやすい。手球が1回のショットで球Aに当たり、その勢いで球Bにも当たる、さらに何かに当たって別方向へはねる、その連続した動き全体が carom。単なる bounce や rebound より「当たって進路が変わる」感じが強く、ニュースや小説では ball caromed off the wall のように off と結びついて出やすい。
Picture a billiard table. In a carom, one ball hits another and then changes direction to hit something else, so remember it as a chain of hits and rebounds. You will often see it with `off`, as in `the ball caromed off the wall`.
