catamaran の語源・成り立ち Etymology
catamaran はタミル語 kaṭṭu-maram「縛った木」が語源で、kaṭṭu（結ぶ）+ maram（木）の複合語です。丸太を束ねた筏の姿がそのまま語になったと見ると意味が腑に落ち、英語の trimaran もこの catamaran を手本に作られました。
Catamaran comes from Tamil kattu-maram, literally "tied wood." It referred to a raft made from logs fastened together. English later used the word for a type of boat with two joined hulls, keeping the idea of connected wooden parts. The later word trimaran was modeled on catamaran.
