chattel は古フランス語 chatel「財産・家畜」から英語化した語で、さらに俗ラテン語 capitale、究極的にはラテン語 caput「頭」にさかのぼります。家畜を“頭数”で数えたことから「財産」→「動産」へ意味が広がり、関連語に cattle, capital があります。
Chattel came into English from Old French chatel, meaning property or goods. It goes back to Late Latin capitale and ultimately to Latin caput, meaning "head." Because livestock was counted by heads, the sense moved from "heads of cattle" to "property," and the word is related to cattle and capital.
