英語 chromatin はドイツ語 Chromatin を経て入り、語源はギリシャ語 chrōma「色」＋化学語尾 -in です。つまり「色がつくもの」で、染色でよく染まる核内物質を指す名になり、chromosome や chrome も同じ語根を持ちます。
