utterance の語源・成り立ち Etymology
utterance は utter「言葉を外へ出す」+ -ance。utter は古英語 utera「外の・外へ」にさかのぼる語で、もともと「外へ出す」が「口に出す」へ進み、utterance はその結果としての「発言」を表す。関連語は outer, utmost。
Utterance comes from utter plus the noun suffix -ance. Utter is connected to an Old English root meaning "outer" or "outward," also seen in outer and utmost. The basic idea was "to put out," which developed into "speak out," and from that utterance came to mean spoken words or an act of speaking.
