動詞として、赤ん坊などがよだれを垂らすこと、また人が中身のないくだらないことをだらだら話すことを表す。文字どおりの行為にも比喩的な話し方にも使われ、文脈でどちらの意味か判断する。後者には相手の発言を軽蔑して批判する響きがある。
To drivel means to talk for a long time in a silly, foolish, or meaningless way. It is usually used to criticize speech that sounds stupid or has little value. In another meaning, it can also mean to let saliva fall from the mouth.

まず「口から何かがだらだら出る」場面で一本化すると覚えやすい。よだれなら文字どおり、言葉なら中身のない話がだらだら出る感じ。似た語では babble は早口で意味不明にしゃべる、ramble は話が脱線して長い、drivel は「くだらない内容」への軽蔑が強い。名詞でも使え、That's drivel. や listen to his drivel の形でよく合う。dribble や drool の「こぼれる」イメージと並べると、口から漏れる感覚で定着しやすい。
Think of something coming out of the mouth in a loose, messy way. It can be real liquid, like drool, or useless words that keep coming out. Compared with ramble, drivel has a stronger feeling of contempt: the problem is not just that it is long, but that it is worthless.
