dribbling は dribble の -ing 形で、dribble は中英語系の「ぽたぽた落ちる」が原義。滴が少しずつ落ちるイメージから、球を細かく突いて運ぶ動作を表すようになった。だからボールが小刻みに弾む感じが核にある。関連語は drip。
