解説 Definition

claiming は claim(主張する、要求する)の現在分詞・動名詞です。根拠の有無にかかわらず、何かが本当だと言っている場面でよく使われます。

Claiming is the present participle and gerund form of claim. It describes saying that something is true or belongs to someone, often without indicating whether the statement has been proved or accepted by others.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

claim の語末の綴りを変えずに -ing を付けた現在分詞・動名詞で、語尾は /ɪŋ/ と発音します。claim that ...「…だと主張する」や claim ownership「所有権を主張する」で覚えましょう。claiming は発言内容が事実だと保証せず、「本人・組織はそう言っている」という距離を残せる表現です。

Claiming is made by adding -ing directly to claim; no letter is removed or doubled, and the ending is pronounced /ɪŋ/. Learn it through the pattern claiming that followed by a statement, as in “The company is claiming that the product is safe.” The word reports what someone asserts while leaving open whether there is enough evidence. It can also concern ownership or a right, as in claiming a ticket or claiming ownership. This makes claiming less neutral than simply saying and less certain than proving or demonstrating.

例文

He is claiming that the ticket is his.

彼はそのチケットは自分のものだと主張しています。

She kept claiming she was right.

彼女は自分が正しいと主張し続けました。

The company is claiming that the product is safe.

その会社は製品は安全だと主張しています。

claiming の語源・成り立ち Etymology

claiming は claim+-ing。claim は古フランス語 claime を経てラテン語 clamare「叫ぶ、声高に求める」にさかのぼり、関連語に exclaim, proclaim がある。もとは公に声を上げて権利を求めることなので、「主張する」の意味になった。

Claiming consists of claim plus the participial and gerund ending -ing. Claim entered English through Old French and ultimately derives from Latin clamare, meaning to cry out or call aloud. Its earlier legal and public uses involved openly demanding something as one’s right, which led to the modern senses of asserting a fact or requesting possession. Exclaim and proclaim come from the same Latin verb and retain the historical idea of making something known with the voice.
