覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
maintaining は maintain に -ing を付けた現在分詞・動名詞です。語末の e はもともとないため、そのまま maintaining とし、maintainning とはしません。maintain health、maintain quality、maintain a bridge のように「良い状態を保ち続ける・手入れする」対象とセットで覚えましょう。
Form maintaining by adding -ing directly to maintain: maintain becomes maintaining, not “maintainning.” The core image is keeping something in a desired state over time. Maintaining good health means continuing healthy conditions; maintaining a clean room means keeping it clean; maintaining a bridge includes inspections and repairs that keep it usable. Unlike obtaining a state once, maintaining implies continued effort. Learn it with recurring objects such as health, quality, standards, relationships, equipment, and infrastructure. As a gerund, it can name the activity itself; as a participle, it appears in continuous verb forms.
例文
She is maintaining a clean room.

maintaining の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 maintenir から。ラテン語 manu tenēre(手で保つ)が語源で、manus(手)+ tenēre(保持する)の合成語。同根語に maintain と同根の mansion(手元に留まる場所→邸宅)や tenable(保持できる)がある。「手でしっかり握り続ける」が原義で、状態を保つ意味になった。
Maintain came into English through Old French maintenir, built from elements ultimately derived from Latin manus, “hand,” and tenere, “to hold.” Its underlying image is therefore “to hold in the hand” or “keep hold of,” which developed into the senses “preserve, continue, support, or keep in repair.” Maintaining is formed by adding the present-participle and gerund suffix -ing to maintain.
