航空機の操縦士が飛行中に操作や監視を行う場所で、飛行機の前部にある。多様な計器やスイッチ、操縦桿などが配置されており、飛行の安全性を確保するために必要な情報が集約されている。一般に乗客は立ち入れず、資格のある乗員だけが作業する。
A cockpit is the area in an aircraft where the pilot sits and controls the plane. The word can also be used for the driver's control area in some racing cars or boats. It refers to a small space filled with instruments and controls.

cockpit は cock「雄鶏」+ pit「穴・囲い」。もとは闘鶏場で、そこから船内の狭い戦闘区画、さらに航空機の操縦席へ広がりました。cockfight や pitfall と並べると、「囲われた場所でのせめぎ合い」という原像が見えます。
Cockpit is made from cock, meaning "rooster," and pit, meaning an enclosed hollow place. It first referred to a pit where cockfights were held. Later it was used for a cramped fighting space on a ship, and then for the pilot's seat in an aircraft.
