cones の語源・成り立ち Etymology
cones は cone の複数形で、語源はギリシャ語 konos「松かさ・円すい」がラテン語 conus を経て英語に入ったものです。先の細い円すい形を指す形の感覚がそのまま意味になっています。関連語は conical, conoid。
Cones is the plural of cone, formed by adding -s. Cone entered English through Latin conus from Greek kōnos, a word used for a pine cone and other pointed or cone-shaped objects. The physical image of a broad circular base narrowing toward a point remained central as the word developed mathematical and everyday uses. Conical, meaning “shaped like a cone,” and conoid, referring to a cone-like form, belong to the same word family.
