A constitutionalist is a person who strongly supports a country’s constitution and believes government power should follow it. The word is often used in law, politics, and history, and it can also mean someone who studies constitutional principles.

constitution はラテン語 constituere「共に据える・定める」由来で、con-「共に」＋ statuere「立てる」からできています。そこに -al「…に関する」＋ -ist「主義者」が付き、「憲法という定めを守ろうとする人」となり、constitute や statue と同系です。
Constitutionalist is built from constitution, which comes from Latin constituere, meaning "to set up" or "to establish," from con- "together" and statuere "to set or place."
