contents はラテン語 continere（中に保つ）に由来し、その過去分詞系 contenta / contentum が中英語で名詞化した語です。con-「共に」+ tenere「保つ」から成り、「中に保たれているもの」という発想で「内容」になりました。関連語は contain, retain。
