contrapuntal は counterpoint と同系で、語源はラテン語 contra『向かい合って』＋ punctum『点』です。point や puncture と同根で、音符を『点』として別の点に対置する発想から、複数旋律が絡む対位法の意味が生まれました。
Contrapuntal belongs to the same family as counterpoint. It comes from Latin contra, "against" or "opposite," and punctum, "point."
