ラテン語 copia（豊富・大量）に由来し、「豊富に書き写されたもの」から「写し」の意味になった。copious（豊富な）と同根。原義の「たくさんある」から「同じものを複製する」へと意味が転じた点が面白い。
Copy ultimately comes from Latin copia, meaning “abundance, supply, or plenty,” a word also related to copious. Through Medieval Latin and Old French, copia developed a sense connected with a written reproduction or transcript, and English copy came to denote something reproduced from an original. The later sense “one individual example of a book or other publication” grew naturally from the idea of multiple reproduced examples.
