covey は英仏語 covee / covée「ひなの群れ」から入り、古フランス語 couver「卵を抱く」、さらにラテン語 cubare「横たわる・伏す」にさかのぼります。もとは「一腹のひな」の感覚なので、そこから鳥や人の「小群」という意味になり、incubate や cubicle も遠い同根です。
Covey came into English from Anglo-French covee or covée, meaning a brood of young birds. It goes back to Old French couver "to brood or sit on eggs," and further to Latin cubare "to lie down." The sense moved from "a group hatched together" to any small group of birds, and later sometimes people. Incubate is from the same distant Latin root.
