A crouton is a small piece of bread that has been toasted or fried until crisp. It is usually added to soups or salads for extra texture and flavor.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
日本語の「クルトン」とほぼ同じなので、まず音で結びつけるのが最短です。そのうえで、食卓の場面ごと覚えると定着しやすい語です。salad croutons, soup with croutons のように、主役ではなく上に散らすカリカリの角切りパンを思い浮かべるとよいです。toast は焼いたパン全般、breadcrumbs はパン粉で、crouton は「スープやサラダに入れる小さな焼きパン片」という使い分けです。複数形 croutons でもよく見ます。
Remember the common food scene: salad or soup with small crunchy bread pieces on top. `Crouton` is not general bread like `toast`, and not powder like `breadcrumbs`. You will often see it in the plural too: `croutons`.
