乾杯
解説 Definition
toast は、誰かや何かを祝って行う乾杯という意味です。日本語の「トースト」は焼いたパンを指すことが多いですが、英語では「乾杯」や「乾杯の言葉」という意味でもよく使われます。

ラテン語 tostus（焼いた）が語源で、torrēre（乾かす・焼く）の過去分詞。もとは焼いたパンを指した。「乾杯」の語義は、かつてワインなどに香辛料入りのトーストを入れた習慣と関連して生じたと考えられている。関連語：torrid（灼熱の）。
Toast ultimately comes from Latin tostus, “dried or roasted,” the past participle of torrēre, “to dry or scorch.” It first referred to browned bread. The drinking sense arose from the former practice of placing spiced toast in wine. The word was later transferred to the person honored by the drink and then to the words or act used to honor someone.
