覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

defer to someone は、相手の知識や地位を尊重し、その人の判断や意向に従う表現です。defer to your expertise、defer to the doctor のように、判断を任せる相手を to の後ろに置きます。「延期する」という別義の defer と混同せず、to が続いたら「相手に判断を委ねる」と捉えます。

The preposition to points toward the person whose judgment you accept: defer to an expert means “follow the expert's judgment.” Use the construction to distinguish this sense from transitive defer meaning “postpone.”

defer to の語源・成り立ち Etymology

defer to の「従う」という用法は、「延期する」の defer とは別の歴史的系統として扱われ、フランス語を経てラテン語 deferre に結び付くとされる。現代英語では同じ綴りだが、to を伴う構文が語義を明確にする。

The yielding sense in defer to is traditionally treated as historically distinct from the postponement sense and is associated, through French, with Latin deferre. The two senses now share the spelling defer, while the construction with to signals this meaning.
