解説 Definition

校正で、文字・語句などを削除するよう指示する記号、またはその削除指示を表す語です。主に編集者、校正者、印刷関係者が校正刷りなどで用います。

A dele is a proofreading mark or instruction indicating that printed, typed, or written material should be deleted. It is used chiefly by editors, proofreaders, and printers when correcting copy or proofs.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

dele は校正紙で「ここを削除せよ」と示す削除記号、またはその指示です。ラテン語 delē「消せ」という命令形が専門語になったもので、delete の先頭 dele- と結び付けると確実です。proofreader marked a dele「校正者が削除記号を付けた」という印刷・出版の場面で覚え、一般的な delete key とは区別します。

Connect dele with the beginning of delete: both concern removing unwanted material. In traditional proofreading, an editor places a dele on a letter, word, or passage to instruct the printer to take it out. The term comes directly from a Latin command meaning “delete” or “erase,” so it can be remembered as an instruction preserved as an English noun. Keep it in the setting of marked-up proofs and editorial corrections. Unlike the everyday Delete key, a dele is specifically a proofreading mark or the deletion instruction represented by that mark.

dele の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 delēre(消す、破壊する)の命令形 delē(消せ)がそのまま英語に入った。校正用語で、不要な文字に付ける削除指示記号。関連語は delete(削除する)、indelible(in- + delible=消せない)。印刷・出版の専門用語として定着した。

Dele was borrowed from Latin dēlē, the singular imperative of dēlēre, meaning “erase, destroy, or delete.” In other words, it originally functioned as the direct command “Delete this.” Printers and proofreaders adopted the command as the name of a correction mark placed on unwanted text. Delete descends from the same Latin verb, while indelible ultimately describes something that cannot be erased.
