Digitally is formed from the adjective digital and the adverb-forming suffix -ly. Digital comes from Latin digitalis, “relating to a finger,” based on digitus, “finger” or “toe.” Because fingers were used for counting, digit came to mean a numerical figure. Digital later described data represented by discrete numerical values, and digitally developed as the corresponding adverb for actions performed using such technology.
