解説
細菌やウイルスを殺して感染を防ぐための薬品。手指や器具などの消毒に使われる。
覚え方のコツ
infect, infection, infected と同じ infect が見えれば覚えやすい語です。dis- は「外す・取り除く」の方向なので、disinfect は「感染のもとを取り除く」、そこに -ant(s) が付いて「その働きをするもの」= 消毒剤。cleaner が汚れを落とす道具なのに対し、disinfectants は細菌・ウイルス対策で使う薬剤。disinfectant spray / wipes, use disinfectants on surfaces の形で場面ごと覚えると定着しやすいです。detergent（洗剤）と混同しないこと。

ラテン語のdis-（否定・除去）+ infectare（汚染する）+ -ant（作用するもの）の構成。infectareはin-（中に）+ facere（作る）から成り、「中に入り込んで害をなす」が原義。つまり「感染（infection）を取り除くもの」という意味。関連語はinfect（感染させる）、disinfection（消毒）。
